Junior Great Books
Junior Great Books is a program for advanced readers Kinder-8th. It gives the children an opportunity to read amazing pieces of literature and discuss in-depth themes as a group. It is meant to cultivate and inspire deeper thinking through reading and discussing. Each classroom teacher choses a small group of accelerated readers to participate. Each small group will meet in the reading lab (201) 1 to 2 times a week from 30-45 minutes during the school day. Each week the group will read a new thought-provoking story and discuss the interpretive questions I present. The students will learn and practice their analytical skills as well as learn to respectfully listen and respond to their classmates.
1st Grade Small Reading Groups
I work with both 1st grade classrooms during reading group time. The students rotate between their classroom with their teacher and my room with me. We read a variety of texts and books at their instructional level. We work on comprehension and fluency while we read. I choose books that support the content that they are currently learning about in science or social studies. We also complete some fun learning projects together.
Intervention Groups
Throughout the day I work with small groups of students that need extra reading support. After we meet about their specific reading needs on the RTI committee, I target those reading needs in small intervention groups. I progress monitor, and as an RTI committee, we check back after 6-8 weeks to see what progress is being made. This is an addition this year to my role as the Reading Teacher, and I think it is extremely beneficial and necessary in order to target all student reading needs.
Wilson Reading Program
St. Viator is very lucky to have this great reading intervention program. I work with small groups of students (1-2) providing systematic phonics instruction. Students who have a reading disability, or need intensive support are good candidates for this program.
